On The Run Ch. 1

"How did they get loose!? Find them, now! We've put too much time and effort into these subjects to let it all go to waste!"

Countless footsteps cluttered the laboratory. The scientists searched everywhere for the twelve escapees that somehow fled from their cages. They would capture, and discover the culprit that released the rest of the experiments.

"We have two over here! They have been subdued!"
"Good! Now find the other ten. Check very carefully. Some of them do have wings. Even if they're not used to them, it won't stop them from trying to leave."

"*Pant, pant*. I gotta... get outta here... but.. where do I.."
"Psst! Hey, get over here before they see you."

Okay, let's stop for a second. Some of you may be wondering just what in the hell is going on. Well everything'll be clear in time. I'll just tell you a little of what's happening right now. My name is Julian. I'm a 15 year old male Avian-Hybrid.
What's that you ask? Well let's see, how can I put this? I'm half human, half bird. Freaky, right? Yeah well just so we're clear, I didn't ask for this to happen to me. I didn't ask to be transformed into this abomination with wings on his back. I don't even like birds, but this is what happens when your parents give you up from birth to some creepy scientist because they didn't want you at all.

Pathetic, right? Oh and don't think I'm the only one. There are about two more that were made like me. Whether they're alive or not, I couldn't tell you. Anyways, that's all I'm gonna say for now. Back to the story. Let the suspense build!

"What are you doing here? They'll find you, y'know. We gotta get outta here. This is our only chance."
"Julian, shut up. I know this, which is why I have an escape route already set up over here."
"Really..? When did you..?"
"A couple of days ago when they let me out of my cage to move around, I had one of the other kids make a distraction long enough for me to use these freaky powers they gave me to make a hole leading to the outside. I covered it up with one of the machines and hoped they wouldn't find it."
"Smart move, Slim. Very smart."

PAUSE! Still confused? Yeah you are, I know. I have to introduce Slim though. She's important to the story. Slim's real name is Jessica. I call her that because she's abnormally skinny. I don't know if it's from what the scientists did to her, or if
she was always like that. She's 16, so she's been here a little longer than me. And the freaky powers she was talking about?
She has Psychokinesis. Lucky.. Alright, that's enough about her for now. Back to the story.

"So what's our next move?"
"We gotta get as much of these kids as we can outta here, as well as ourselves."
"Alright, now how do we do this without getting re-captured? They have about five of them already from the looks of things.
I say we save ourselves at this point. There's no way."
"We can't just leave them, Julian. Have a freakin' heart, man."
"Okay, okay. *Looks around* I can see one of them from here. I might be able to fly over to him."
"You've gotten a handle on your wings?"
"Yes ma'am. I got a lot of practice time in recently. Watch this."

Julian stands tall and spreads his wings out, and begins to get a running start. As he hits the railing, he jumps over the top, dives down, and then begins to flap his wings hard. He continues to flap harder and manages to stay above ground. He flashes an assuring look over to Jessica and as he turns to rescue the child he spotted, two scientists spot him at the same time.

"One's taken flight! Shoot him down!"
"Ahh crap!"

The scientists start shooting Tranq. darts at Julian, trying to take him out as he just dodges each one. He makes a quick dive for the kid, grabs him and flies back towards Jessica.

"Slim! Go! We're outta here!"

She jumps into the hole that she made and begins to tunnel through to the surface. Julian and the child follow right behind her. To prevent from being followed, Jessica uses her powers to collapse the tunnel she made when they get to the other side.

"We're out! Free!"
"Not out of the woods yet, Juli."
"You're right. Let's keep moving."
"Wait!"

Julian and Jessica turn to the child.

"Thank you so much for getting me out of there. I couldn't take it anymore."
"Listen, we'll talk later... Uhhh... What was your name again?"
"Kevin. My name's Kevin. And you're right, Jessica. we should keep moving."
"Alright, let's go."

Let's stop there and introduce Kevin. You see he's kind of a special case. Kid's only about 9 years old. Been in the lab he was 4. His parents brought him here on his fourth birthday. He doesn't really like to talk about it, so that's about all I know of him. Not sure what his powers are either, if he even has any. Kevin really is just one big mystery, but I'm sure we'll find out more as time passes on. After all, it's just him, Slim and I on our own, fighting to survive in a world we've never really had the chance of getting to know.

Things will be fine though... Right..?
